On 12 January 1844, Hobson’s successor, Governor FitzRoy, directed that Kororareka would henceforth be included within the (now virtually non-existent) township of Russell, and would officially be known as Russell. At the same time it was reinstated as Port of Entry at the Bay of Islands.52 In view of the slight that Kororareka had already received from officialdom, it was hardly likely that its residents would be in any hurry to adopt this new name. In recognition of their resistance it seems appropriate for us to continue using the original name Kororareka, at least for a while yet. But if the residents of ‘new Russell’ derived some slight satisfaction from the passing of the settlement to the south, a similar fate now awaited their own.
